The electrification system used by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) for electric train operations is based on 25 kV, 50 Hz alternating current in line with international standards for modern rail systems, especially for KTM Komuter and Electric Train Service (ETS) services.
The power supply is obtained from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) at high voltage which is channeled to the Traction Substation to be stepped down to 25 kV AC before being distributed through the Overhead Catenary System (OCS) to the train via pantographs, then processed by the onboard power system including transformers, power converters and inverters to drive the traction motors, with the support of regenerative braking technology to increase energy efficiency, while the entire system is equipped with comprehensive protection, grounding and supply isolation mechanisms to ensure safe, stable and continuous train operations, thus reflecting KTMB's commitment in providing efficient, sustainable and competitive rail transport services.
The total distance of railway lines operated by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) is 2,783 km including yards, loops and sidings. At present, 782 km of the line is double electric track including the new line from Gemas - Johor Bahru along 192 km which was just inaugurated in December 2025. The 681 km line is single track which connects the Gemas - Tumpat area. At the same time, the distance of the operating track at this time is 1,655 km.
